Chemical Peels (Everything You Should Know)

Turning back the clock on our skin is a constant battle. Dark spots, sun spots, acne or just plain old too much sun all threaten our skin complexion. Luckily we live in an age where treatments are everywhere and finding the right one for you might just take some time.

When we bring up chemical peels people often look a little worried. We get it. The word chemical doesn’t sound like the safest or the most pleasant experience in the world. But rest easy, chemical peels are extremely simple and with the right clinician, very effective. These peels are FDA approved and as of late —are very popular.

But every now and then there comes a trend so popular that it may seem too good to be true.  However, when it comes to chemical peels it may just be because it works.

There are a ton of skin issues that chemical peels can help fix.

  • Aging skin
  • Acne
  • Hyperpigmentation

Aging skin

We’re all looking for ways to slow down aging skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable, but there are many ways to slow down the process. Serums, creams and gels are definitely a possible option, but they don’t work for everyone. Chemical peels do wonders for improving skin texture by reducing laxity and dullness.

Acne

Unwanted breakouts are the worst. Once they occur, it’s basically a race to reduce the damage that’s already been done. But there are ways to prevent breakouts from occurring in the first place. Acne is caused by clogged pores. This can be from oil or debris that gets left behind even after you wash your face. Chemical peels help reduce oily skin and therefore help combat acne!

Hyperpigmentation

If you don’t know what this word means, don’t worry. Hyperpigmentation refers to dark spots or discoloration. Chemical peels rejuvenate cell reproduction and can help lift dark spots.

Some chemical peels even come with brighteners that reduce the symptoms of hyperpigmentation.

How does it work?

Chemical peels are used primarily to create a new smooth texture of skin. But how? Like many treatments we provide, it helps your skin shed off a layer revealing new, healthy and vibrant skin. Your skin often has layers of dry or dead skin that can cause problems like acne or blackheads to form, but chemical peels work to remove those unwanted layers.

What you should do before you get a chemical peel

Preparing for a chemical peels is important. To get the best results there a few things you should remember when prepping for your peel.

1.Pick the right peel

This means that you’ll need to do some research. Everyone’s skin is a little different and results from one may differ from another. Get recommendations from a few different places and weigh out your options. Make sure that they are taking into consideration important factors like your age, your skin condition and the color of your skin. Peels are pretty specific, so don’t go for the cheapest one-size-fits-all option.

2. Stray away from exfoliates

Exfoliates like retinol or salicylic acid that are in many beauty products are a big no no before a chemical peel. Because chemical peels work to remove a layer of unwanted skin, you’ll want to stop using any products that may cause irritation. This is to reduce any damage that can occur during the peel process. If you have super sensitive skin, this can include scrubs as well.

3. Double check your prescriptions

Like any treatment you undergo, your practitioner should be aware of any current medications you’re taking that could interfere with the chemical peel. Talk to your dermatologist about whether or not any of the medication you are taking could affect the chemical peel treatment.

4. Hydrate your skin

If you’re looking to have healthy skin you should already be doing this. But before a treatment like a chemical peel, this is even more important. Keep your skin healthy and moisturized prior to your treatment. This means you may have to put a hold on any products you’re using that dry out your skin.

5. There is a healing process

Don’t plan a peel the day before your wedding. If you’re planning on getting a peel for an event or a special occasion, make sure you give yourself time to heal. Everyone heals at a different pace, so just make sure you budget your time accordingly.

What’s it like after the chemical peel?

Your skin will need some time to peel and heal. This may take roughly 3-10 days depending on your skin. You can expect some peeling for a few days after your treatment which is why we recommended you don’t plan any big events directly after your chemical peel.

You may want to use a gentle cleanser or hydrating serums to help with any possible irritation. Keep your skin cool and don’t do anything that could overheat it. Also, don’t expose yourself to too much sunlight either. If you do find yourself outside make sure you are using products that contain SPF qualities.
